If you are wondering what it is that I mean by that let me elaborate..
On the eve of 15th august, an amazing thing dawned upon our country..
This was known as independence..
Something that we long craved for..something that gives us reason to be proud of our countrymen..
Martyrs who sacrificed their lives so that their sons and their sons could lead a life they could be proud of..and passed away with a smile on their faces imagining the future of their country..
The hard part was over on that dawn in 1947 but could we seriously say that we have done our part..
Could we say that we have done all we can to fulfill their dreams..
Well, I'm one of those who thinks that we could have certainly done better..
If u are still wondering what I want to say,let me tell you another small story..
The short and sweet story of the constitution..
It's not just a huge pile on endless laws scribbled across tons of paper..
Our constitution is a dream..the dream of hope..something that was formulated to bring about unity in our vast country..
But does the key to bring about unity among a country with a culture as diverse as ours lie in something called reservation..
Lets think about it for a minute because it's a matter that concerns all of us..most of us have had to go for our education to universities in which most of the seats have already been reserved..
There was a point of time in our history when people didn't even take the concept of equality seriously..
That was when we needed reservations in various fields to ensure that the scheduled castes have an opportunity to the good things in life that they had long been denied..
At that point that was the bravest move that was made and has resulted in the nourishment of many a lives..
But now as we enter the 21st century do we really need this form of discrimination..
Do we really need to term people as those belonging to schedule castes and not just people that they are..
Why do we force favours on them when what we need to do is to treat them and everyone else as our equals..
There still are lots of people who discriminate on the basis of caste and creed but education is far beyond such frivolous issues..
It is the foundation that our future stands on..
There should be help for the needy..there should be the equality..
But having reservation is not the way to do it..perhaps,scholarships and financial aid would be a much more effective option in places like mumbai..
Recently ,I went for my engineering admissions..
The difference in the closing percentages of the open merit and the scheduled caste quota was at times 50 marks out of 300..
Now that is an alarming figure..
And the no. out seats reserved for various castes is even more alarming..
That coupled with college preferences for minorities or as they are called hardly leaves enough seats for the deserving..
I didn't write this article to state my frustration or in expectations that tomorrow suddenly some politician would read it and do something about it..
I wrote it because India is my country and I feel related to all my countrymen..
There's more to that than just words..there's feelings and most important of all hope..
Hope that someday a dream would come true………
( If you think that that my article has any basis,no matter who you are,I would be grateful if u forwaded this letter to your friends after writing your name underneath as a sign of your protest..
thank you )
