# The name of the company(along with the place where
it's situated), the time (month) when a certain
incident happened.
--------------------
Company: Planetasia
Month: May 2nd Week
--------------------
AND, since this is gonna go to various people who have
had different experiences, I would just expect that
the concerned person talks about his/her personal
experience(or the exp of his/her contemporaries)
-talking about whatever he/she thinks is
important enough to be mentioned....OK? Anyway, these
are some of the questions one could try n' answer....
# What has been the person's experience, how was the
news broken, what was the notice period(if any)...
--------------------
One fine tuesday afternoon all the freshers(< 1 yr exp) got a mail that
there was going to be a written test based on the induction training the
coming Sunday. That was the biggest hint that PA will be retrenching.
Since a month before that projects became hard to come and lits of
people were on bench and the VCs were baying for blood and asking for
restructing of employee strength. Since the freshers contributed the
least to projects the decision was to give the boot to almost half of
150 freshers. Then there were some people in the top officials who
opposed about only one section of the employees getting the boot. So a
decision was made to pick experienced people as well and let go. On
friday all the contract employees got the boot about 20 of them. All
that week all the employees were terrified...as if the sword of Damocles
hanging on top of our head. They were frenctically applying to all the
consultants they knew and to friends in other companies. PA resumes were
all around. The Sunday all the freshers appeared the tests all terrified
of results. At least the experienced ones had the option to apply
elsewhere based on their exp ...but freshers! The whole week saw
meetings between top officials then that thursday the head of different
groups came to some employees(not freshers) and asked them for a meeting
with them on friday. About 25 of them were informed and all had
different timings...10:15 , 10:25 etc...On Friday those people went to a
room at their scheduled timings. The group head and HR of that person
was there and gave a lecture regarding the company not doing well and
that the person has the option to leave the company. There were two
options available 'resignation or termination'. All were asked to sign
resignations and were given 3 months salary. Its not that these people
didnt ask about the reason of termination. When some insisted
...attitude problem, performance were stated as the reasons. The HR was
holding the employee records of everyone with vivid details like who
refused for a project or disobeyed PM etc. All of them had different
meeting times to make sure these laid off people dont bump into each
other. By this time chaos was all around PA. Employees were feeling very
low....terrified. The news came in rediff and the whole of Bangalore
knew about PA lay off. That Friday afternoon after 4:00 the freshers who
supposedly fared badly at the test conducted got mails from the HR to
have a meeting on Monday at different timings again. About 25 of them
got mails. Monday onwards the rumours started regarding the reasons for
lay offs.... about numbers of laid of which varied from 50 to 200.
Actually about 70 people were laid off including 20 contract employees.
We were waiting for the next round of lay offs when meetings were
organised to inform the employees about what was going on since the last
2 weeks. The group head nicely put it that it was not a lay-off and some
employees were asked to go because of their lack of performance and
attitude problem. After that the exodus started with employees feeling
the insecurity of job etc. Its still continuing.
# What does the employee feel about the whole process?
Does he/she feel that they were dealt with in a good
manner? If not, what does he/she feel should have been
the way?
The Employee of course was very not glad about the proceedings ;-). They
were of course not convinced of they way they were picked up to get the
boot. Some of them left best jobs and joined PA only to get the boot and
the taboo of being laid off.
# Should the companies "announce" their lay-offs
publicly? Or shouldn't they?
In this instance there was no lay-off officially and none of the Indian
companies so far has announced publicly. The publicity was thru word of
mouth and e-mails and investigative websites like rediff.
# Whats the diff in the employee's perspective being
laid off in India and abroad?(Indian corporate tactics
Vs. those abroad)
In US lay-offs are announced publicly and a laid of guy is not looked
down upon. An employee laid off in India finds it more difficult to find
another job and to cope up emotionally.
# how long does it take generally to be absorbed at
another place (as in finding another job)?
A week to even months...
